Arrive in Singapore 2 January 2010 and depart Singapore 18th January 2010

Composed Components - Lampworking with B. Jane Cowie and Paul “Sui” Jackson.

The workshop will be extremely crazy, fun and very busy. Get ready to sweat. The aim of the workshop is to get as much hands on experience as possible with the lamp work technique and challenge traditional notions of how a lamp worker can work. Working together we will create component pieces that will go beyond normal expectations. Experimentation with the glass will be encourages. Chandeliers, wall features large art installations will be part of our plan.

We will be working alongside factory lamp workers, under their watchful eyes, and those of the other ‘drop ins’. Be prepared to be “on stage”. However, you will likewise be watching. We hope this visual exchange of making processes, techniques, and ideas will encourage technical and cultural exchanges as well as new approaches to tacit learning.

Art Glass Solutions aims to offer new and extreme opportunities to link artists and industries. The exchange of information techniques, cultures and customs is the reason for hosting the workshops in real life situations.

No prior experience is necessary. Note, Vegans, Vegetarians and people who do not eat pork will find the food available particularly challenging!

Please contact Dominic on dominic@artglasssolutions.com for more information and to book your place.

Event: Palimpsest, an Art Glass Solutions Exhibition
Opening: Thursday 10 November 2009
Duration: 11 November till 9 December 2009
Location: Sculpture Square, 155 Middle Road, Singapore

Art Glass Solutions is proud to announce our forthcoming collaborative exhibition Palimpsest. The exhibition will feature twelve artists of international standing all born or based in Singapore. The artists are working together in a collaborative working style to create artworks that use other artworks as canvases in order to create a Palimpsest.

A Palimpsest is a manuscript written over a partly erased older manuscript

in such a way that the old words can be read beneath the new…

The exhibition is curated by Dominic Fondé for Art Glass Solutions and features the artists:

Chris Yap, Ng Siok Hoon, Anita Nevins, Michelle Zheng, Noriko Suzuki-Bosco, April Ng, B. Jane Cowie, Sunny Chyun, Richard Lim, Chua Teng Yeow, Dominic Fondé and Joshua Yang.

The exhibition aims to explore the process of collaborative works, open a dialogue between artists conceptually and technically, and engender links between resident and expatriate artists living and working in Singapore. These artists work in a diverse range of media, ranging from photography to painting, digital animation to charcoal drawing. The project additionally provides artists with the opportunity to experiment with glass as an artist’s material within the Art Glass Solutions studios in Singapore.

Singapore is a country created by a diverse mixture of people, customs and cultures. We live together and create close collaborative communities, which over time contribute to the palimpsest development of our uniquely Singaporean culture. The exhibition is a celebration of our shared lives and living space as an important factor to the development of this nation state.

The exhibition will be held at Sculpture Square during November and December 2009 and is accompanied by a series of artist talks and workshops run in conjunction with the exhibition.

Event: Exhibition “The Red and The Orange”
Location: Vitria Gallery 17 Chee Hoon Avenue, Singapore 299750 (T+65 6462 4244 F +65 6877 2493)

The Red and The Orange is a “collaborative response to living and working in Asia” by Art Glass Solutions artists Dominic Fondé and B. Jane Cowie. The exhibition will be at Vitria Gallery in May 2009.

The title of the show comes from the colour scheme selected by the two artists in consultation with the Gallery Director. It is their starting point for themes and ideas they will investigate and develop within the work. “These colours carry a lot of significance for us” Dominic explains. “We work with hot molten glass which glows a wonderful orange. This colour is representative of our livelihood and our passion for what we do. It is also the orange we selected for our company logo - the warm orange glow of molten glass.”

“The colour red has cultural significance in this part of the world. Just think of all the “prosperity red” you see at Lunar New Year and additionally, Singapore, where we now live and work, is often referred to as the ‘little red dot’.” Art galleries such as Vitria, denote sales by placing a small red dot sticker next to the artwork once sold. “We are hoping to see lots of them during the course of the exhibition” Dominic says with a grin.

On a more serious note he comments that “a red dot on a map is often a marker telling you ‘you are here’. Thematically, a big part of this show is the two of us working out where we are physically and emotionally.” Focusing on their selected colour palette Jane and Dominic address issues such as “who are we, where are we, and how did we two glassblowers / artists end up working together in this equatorial part of the world?”

The Vitria Gallery is open Tuesday and Thursday from 12pm to 6pm and at all other times by appointment. There will be several events running during the exhibition period so a visit to the gallery is well work the visual as well as a cultural feast.

The Red and The Orange will be opened on 23rd May and run for 3 weeks until Friday 12th May.

Price: $6

Date/time: 24th April 2009 (show starts 7.00pm prompt)

Venue: 39 Kuo Chuan Avenue Singapore

Short Stories and Wine tasting at the Gallery at 39 is a unique story telling event at which British glass artist Dominic Fondé will read a selection of his original short stories. For many years Dominic has focused his stories on the emotional weight that glass objects such as vases, paperweights and wineglasses play in our lives.

This is the first time he has given a reading of his stories in Singapore and to make this event truly special a selection of wines will be available for the audience to sample as he reads. The wines will be specially chosen to compliment and enhance the mood of the stories. The wines are chosen and provided by Magma, purveyors of authentic German food and wine.

The evening will culminate in prize draw with one of Dominic’s hand engraved wine glasses and a bottle of wine supplied by Magma up for grabs. Members of the audience are then encouraged to chat with Dominic and the proprietors of Magma to learn more about glass art and sample more fine German wines.

About Dominic Fondé and Art Glass Solutions

“Scent Away” — a solo exhibition by B. Jane Cowie.

Date: 4th – 29th March 2009

Venue: FOST Gallery, 28 Kim Yam Road, Singapore 239366. Tel + 65 6836 2661

Art Glass Solutions is proud to announce that B. Jane Cowie, Creative Director of Art Glass Solutions will be holding a solo exhibition of new works in Singapore in March.

The exhibition will indicate an increasing transient nature of art and my thoughts of life. The work continues a focus on memory and nostalgia as I combine permanent and impermanent materials within this new body of work. Addressing the temporary nature of living and existence, the works speak of the beauty of the moment and the memory that remains after the moment has passed. The works look at the transitory moments of our lives and relationships.

- B. Jane Cowie

Using the duality of materials such as glass, which is both hard and soft, fragile yet strong, beautiful but dangerous, Cowie works within a transient realm of experience and asks us to experience, taste, smell and to touch her artworks rather than simply look at them. Her art incorporates an increasing mixed media approach. How do we describe experiences to others, does the personal ‘note to self’ remain as irregular memories? Can this experience be explained or translated through our senses to others?
